Aggression in the Sports World: A Social Psychological Perspective
NEW RELEASE

This text was written for colleagues, students and sports savvy fans. Written in an engaging style, Aggression in the Sports World develops strong international and interdisciplinary themes in presenting major findings on questions of sports aggression. Topics range from a focus on personality traits that predispose individuals to act aggressively to a wider concern with who riots, why they riot and situations favouring the occurrence of sports riots. Research on the equally disturbing phenomenon of crowd panics explores the underlying causes and peculiar behaviours of people caught up in panics. A series of proposals intended to prevent or minimize the severity of riots and panics accompanies both topics. Other topics include media and cultural influences, troublemakers inciting others, blind obedience to authority and the emulation of unworthy personal heroes. Environmental factors such as temperature, noise and colour are shown to exert important effects on people’s aggression as do popular legal and illegal drugs. Lastly, the book explores the relationship between aggression and what is probably the most revered concept in sports: competition.
